| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:56 am » Was a pleasure and I wish you well. |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:53 am » sheeesh - well good luck on coming through that GM I am sure you will do it in style and now I must say a big thank you to you for appearing on here my friend, much appreciated, all the best to fine lady or should I say ladies as your granddaughter will I guess need picking up from school later |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:49 am » Ah! the spending review, first of all I have to say I am not a fan of the coalition and I did not vote for either of them. I am of the opinion that we are going a little to fast and the previous governments softer approach which had its problems would be better for all. I think we will all be effected in many ways. I work for the Highways Agency as a Traffic Officer and we are in the process of reviewing what and how we do things from vehicles to equipment. |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:42 am » Guiness what do you think of these CUTS? the spending review and all that? will you be effected? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:41 am » Yes not hard to believe we have had so many good times in the most beautiful surroundings, we have also stay on a site at Crytal Palace in London and it was so quiet and peaceful that you would not believe you were in a city. With the number 3 bus passing the entrance a 40 minute bus ride and you were in the middle of town with all it has to offer. |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:40 am » here's ME driving it in 1989 http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?doc ... 178323084# |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:38 am » my Mum and Dad had a motor home, it was a Shepa caravanette, it was the only brand new vehicle my Dad ever bought, he just loved it |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:37 am » Not next year maybe the year after possibly the Carribean. We used to have a caravan we now have a motorhome and try and get away as often as we can for weekends and longer so we are planning to take our main holiday in the UK next yearin the motor |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:35 am » nice one, so I guess that you will be going on another cruise next year? any idea where? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:34 am » Cant think of a worst day |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:33 am » Visiting "Carnac" and seeing the size of the structure and discovering that it had all been covered by the shifing sands and had to be excavated quite some feat, and the colours of the drawings and quality of carving. |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:32 am » which was the best day of the cruises? which was the worst day of the cruises? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:30 am » A holiday and I wanted to see the tombs they really do have to be seen. We like Boats and ships as well we have not long returned from a Med cruise. |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:28 am » how did you decide to GO on such a cruise? was it an anniversary expedition or just another holiday? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:27 am » that was last year, yes I would we used Cosmos or an off shute, the boat was Called the "Senasta St George" and the boat was very good possibly the best on the Nile. All the trips were included and there were some very early starts to avoid the heat of the day but it was a fantastic trip and I am still amazed at the tombs |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:23 am » Guinness you once went on a Nile Cruise, would you ever go again? and did you enjoy it? |
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:22 am » exactly, I am sure this is a correct appraisal of the issues |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:21 am » Yes I agree once they are watching them. The book The Two of US by Sheila Hanncock gives a very good insight into John Thaw |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:20 am » yeah my Mum was shocked at the reviews, my brother read them out to her and they both were adamant they would never buy the series, secretly I bought it and I think they will still be pleasantly surprised |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:19 am » Yes I enjoyed the Sweeney as well, John Thaw was a very accomplished actor. |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:18 am » I guess technology has moved on from the earlier episodes. But it still is quality viewing. |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:18 am » Personally I really did prefer him in THE SWEENEY but they are both superb |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:16 am » I just bought that series for my Mum for Christmas, complaints (in the reviews) over the QUALITY of the early episodes has put many people off buying it |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:15 am » There are many but one of the more recent ones would be "Morse" |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:13 am » yeah I'll second that, any other old TV series that could tempt you to spend the money to get them from the shops? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:13 am » Unfortunately the TV companies dont appear to be able to produce these series anymore. |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:11 am » Howards Way is a TV series centering on a "BOAT YARD" back in the 1980s as you know, the entire series is now up for grabs and is a real treasure, massive in fact |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:10 am » Yes I remember Howards Way, I only ever sailed on Lakes and rivers in Enterprize class craft and that was a long time ago now. |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:10 am » crikey you have been through tough times my friend, not an easy start, I salute you too |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:09 am » Long story but I will be brief, Born in Birmingham, both my parents died when I was quite young, I grew up in various childrens homes and found myself at the age of 16 local to Cambridge. |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:09 am » Aaaah just read on your profile that you were a sailing man in years gone by, well I just received the box set of "HOWARDS WAY" and it is superb, remember that TV series? |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:05 am » hmmm I have never ventured into that part of the UK, how did you settle there or have you been there born and bred? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:04 am » She was too young. Most towns and cities have a different character dependant on time of day. I live just outside of Cambridge. |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:02 am » oh crikey THAT was on in Kingston for sure,my brother went and saw it with our Mum, they absolutely loved it! did you take your granddaughter or was she too young? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:01 am » Last film we went to see was the new Alice in Wonderland in 3D amazing. |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:01 am » yeah it's pretty good, it has two modes "NIGHT" and "DAY" but I guess you can say that about any town across London |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:00 am » Best of both worlds then peace and quiet with all you need a short trip away. I guess Kingston is quite a large town? |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 10:00 am » hehe I last heard that you enjoyed "Marley and Me" anything since? |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:59 am » no I live in the shadow of Kingston, I can nip in and leave under the cover of darkness without anyine knowing |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:58 am » Well I find that disturbing but as I am not familiar with the site and do not know the book cant comment. Changing tack now do you live in Kingston? |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:56 am » well the "Mums net" site was reported to have been forced into backtracking/ deleting/ announcing/ all in favour of this book under threat of legal action, they U turned to avoid a court case |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:55 am » Crikey! must have been some strong views. Makes for a very dull world if we all have to conform to a specific. |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:52 am » well it happened with another website "mums net" where some mum members gave their view on a book the site was discussing, the author threatened legal action which nearly shut the site down |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:51 am » Why! for the little time I spent on there I did not think there was anything to warrant that kind of responce |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:50 am » yeah he announced "family reasons" and then the site was "gone" |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:49 am » Oh that dont sound good, just remembered I may have been on that site now you mention it suddenly going down |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:48 am » the bloke in charge "suddenly" downed tools and shut the site down |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:47 am » No I did not were they good? |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:47 am » Guinnes did you ever go on that site "Roadside Patrol" that let RAC and AA crew give their twopenneth? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:45 am » We have no problems with helping we would do anything for our family, yes it is a very common thing nowadys for unfortunately. But life goes on and she brings much joy to our house. She has a very special relationship with our dog which gives everyone that sees them together much pleasure. |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:43 am » yikes, so your lives changed dramatically, what an amazing change to occur, is your missus happy with this too? sorry to hear what happened, the father leaving is major but so common nowadays |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:41 am » We have been very lucky it was about 3 years before we were trusted to take her away with us in the caravan but we now help out and have time with her on a regular basis as my daughter works and is no longer with her father |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:39 am » areyou glad to look after her, many grandparents are denied this level of access which is a shame, the age of 4 - 9 is such a totally magic age e.g. Christmas, Easter |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:38 am » She has several that she likes to sing and dance to but its not my type of music |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:37 am » haha that is amazing, you must be very proud Guinness, what is her best song? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:36 am » No she is a very out going and socialable and makes friends very easily but she is the smallest in her class which does not reflect in her confidence]# |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:35 am » crikey they start early at school nowadays,my goodness, is she scared? |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:34 am » She will be 5 on thursday Nevember the 4th |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:34 am » you lucky fella! |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:34 am » I have just taken my Grand Daughter to school |
| falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:31 am » what are you doing today Mr Guinness? |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:28 am » yesI've just had a total nightmare with my laptop, "anti-virus hasn't started" after SYSTEM RESTORE |
| Guinness Man « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:27 am » Hello Falkor good to hear you |
|
falkor « Tue Nov 02, 2010 9:24 am » Good morning The Guinness Man !! |
|
The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:31 pm » Take care and I'll speak soon, chiao for now |
|
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:30 pm » well you never know, thank you again my friend, it's been an absolute pleasure |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:29 pm » Not a problem, I hope the forum takes off and you get rewarded for all your hard work with plenty of members and a thriving site |
|
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:28 pm » you should be proud Highway, I salute you and may I take this opportunity of saying a big thank you to coming onboard here tonight, I have thoroughly enjoyed this |
|
The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:26 pm » I learn't all the stuff to pass the exams, just didn't apply myself when it came to the exams. I didn't have the qualifications, but I wasn't backward in coming forward if you know what I mean. It didn't stop me from joining the Royal Military Police where I climbed the ranks. |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:22 pm » wait a minute Highway, you worked as a store tec!! that is no easy job and you must have known how to cross your Ts to do that!! |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:21 pm » I'm afraid I'm one of life's under performers, I hated school with a passion and couldn't wait to leave. |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:20 pm » I know, it is extremely sad and Kingston Uni has a large presence here in Kingston too, my daughter attended Kingston university and came out with an Honours Degree in English just a few short years back |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:19 pm » I was reading the other day that there are record numbers of university students graduating in Engineering, IT and so on, no jobs for 'em mate!! |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:18 pm » yeah there is and I went to a conference organised by them up at Southwark last month > viewtopic.php?f=4&t=39 it was because of what I learnt on that that I did the KINGSTON PUBS list |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:17 pm » Looking at this site and seeing what you're trying to do for your community, is there a group that encourages Community Websites across London? |
|
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:17 pm » it does help if you are appreciated at work and you have good people to work with, people who "hate going to work" have a very tough time |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:16 pm » I was part of a 6 man team, never a dull moment!!! |
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:15 pm » wow - marvellous! never done that but it strikes me you would need good support/ back up |
|
The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:15 pm » A better job came along paying 3 times as much. |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:13 pm » Let me guess, after the 2 years you realised the wages were not exactly "High" ? or a better job came along? |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:13 pm » I was in plain clothes as a store detective. |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:12 pm » Bentalls security have the run of the entire building, it's enormous! they look fabulous, the essence of professionalism |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:12 pm » I done it for 2 years when I first left the forces |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:11 pm » really Highway, for how long? |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:10 pm » I know only too well how hard retail security teams work. I used to be a member of one!!! |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:09 pm » Bentalls itself has a fantastic security team, I have seen them in action |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:08 pm » well all I can say is that we now have Lord Justice Goldring suggesting Richmond Magistrates' Court should close instead of Kingston Court so who knows what will happen? |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:08 pm » I suppose a decent shopping centre like that is going to attract undesirables, to deal with them, what is going on with the Kingston Magistrates Court? is it closing down? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:08 pm » the basement is well worth a look, apart from McDonalds and WH SMITH down there, Bentalls "excess gear" shop is not far away and very popular with the ladies I know |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:07 pm » but going back to the Bentalls Centre, if you head up top - you do come to the TOILETS and I reckon they were refurb'd this year, good job they did on them too, very impressive |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:07 pm » yes I certainly have, I had a good look around HMV which I am glad to say is still going strong, bumped into a mate of mine in the neighbouring "GAME" shop, he is all starry eyed over his beloved PS3 of course - ummmm I do love browsing through those A4 sized glossy books - the ones that give you the whole lo down on "assassins Creed 2" - yeah love 'em, wouldn't it be great to see one on DOOM, or Tomb Raider or Duke Nukem, hehe they were the days for sure |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:07 pm » have you been to the Bentalls Centre lately? |
|
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:06 pm » yeah I was pretty disappoinred by that |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:05 pm » That's not nice to hear, you'd have thought a locak paper would have at least had a look, even if it was a thanks but no thanks!! talking of local politics, who is the Mayor of Kingston and what is she doing for us this year? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:03 pm » Yes I interviewed the Councillor alright, he was a gentleman. When I emailed the transcript to the Surrey Comet I did not even get a reply. I emailed it a second time. SILENCE, not a word, I thought they might be interested, evidently I was wrong on that |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:03 pm » There' a couple of councillors I speak too on a regular basis, I heard that you interviewed the Councillor David Cunningham fairly recently |
|
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:01 pm » tons I tell you Highway Kingston is spoiled for choice |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:00 pm » they can be quite annoying, getting back to the forum, are there many competitor sites looking for local Kingston community discussion? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:59 pm » I do miss Jonathan Ross from LBC he was legendary, SMOOTH radio is pretty cool too, I cannot stand some of these competitions, the celebrety voices OMG wot a crock |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:57 pm » I listen to radio one first thing in the morning, radio two mid morning and CDs in the afternoon/evening |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:56 pm » yeah fair comment, I listen to the radio in the car a lot, Radio Jackie, BBC2, LBC, Heart ,Magic |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:54 pm » What I tend to do is I make a compilation of all my favourite songs and burn them to disc, that way I don't overfill the car with CDs that I'll only listen to one or two songs from. |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:53 pm » Can I ask you, do you play commercial CDs full stop or do you ever have CDs in your car that YOU burnt to? |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:52 pm » My tape collection diminished over the years till I only had one or two left. As the CD collection grew, it was the logical solution to get a CD player for the car. |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:51 pm » so what happened to your tapes? did you not have any top tapes that you couldn't ditch Highway?? |
|
The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:50 pm » Ooh no, my cassette player was slung out years ago, I love my CDs in the car. |
|
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:49 pm » yeah that is classic, in my car we still have a cassette player- golden bennett but I still have plenty of tapes |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:48 pm » I don't have a particular favourite, I have a very mixed collection, from trance to classical rock to shows. I suppose one I play a lot in the car is War of the worlds |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:47 pm » what's YOUR all time top double CD Hihway? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:46 pm » double CDS, well about this time last year I got the double CD GENESIS "LIVE OVER EUROPE 2007" and boy what a smasher it is, this is the ultimate live CD for Genesis I am telling you,now when I listened to it first off I did notoce quite a number of tracks where I thought "don't know that one" and "don'tnow that one either" but they have actualy chosen the top Genesis tracks of all time and performed them live, the CD is absolute GOLD!! I have never stopped listening to it since |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:46 pm » going back to Alice Cooper, talking about music CDs, have you got an all time great?? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:45 pm » of course the towpath also goes NORTH towards Richmond - simply find SKERNE ROAD, head off down King's Walk from there to the Towpath heading North towards Richmond and in fact you can go to KEW GARDENS - again a glorious route for bicycles just don't bother on a SUNDAY that's my advice |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:45 pm » there is tons of cycling to be had and of course don't forget HALFORDS in Thames St for all your cycling wants. once you are ON the bike simply toddle across Kingston Bridge and take a swift LEFT (SOUTH) onto the jolly old TOW PATH to Hampton Court and there you have a wonderful leisure half hour ride - could go even further along the towpath through East Molesey lock to Sunbury probably an hour that one, but GLORIOUS and every inch adjacent to the River Thames and nowhere near roads, BLINDING! |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:45 pm » talking of which, is there much cycling to be had around Kingston? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:44 pm » I certainly did - in the 70s I was going to school there, used the buses, cycled the back roads, went on the train, a good friend of mine lived on the Richmond Road for definite, so I pretty much knew it inside out |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:43 pm » I recall where I grew up and the decade that fashion forgot, do you remember Kingston in the 70s? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:43 pm » Schools Out from Alice Cooper playing in the background ..... |
|
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:42 pm » yeah I did actually, ummm the school I went to no longer exists now |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:41 pm » So you appear to have lived here a while with your knowledge of the area, did you go to school in Kingston? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:40 pm » the photos shown on that page you may notice have website tags "www kingston forums .co.uk" in white. These photos my wife took. when the site launched we used some other photos to begin with but as my missus is a top photographer decided we might as well have our own! |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:40 pm » I've just been looking at some of the great photos on the site, I had a look at the PBASE "page" that you made in your "statics" section, where did the photos come from? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:39 pm » Kingston Cafes - well funny enough I was with the missus last week, to a swift punt through MILLETS, just keep going, you get to the back of MILLETS and lo and behold there is BRIDGES RESTAURANT. It has been there for years and is a closely guarded secret from what I can see. The place is roomy, friendly, plenty on offer to eat, hot food to a good standard, great staff, great accommodation, gotta say IT'S GREAT!! |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:38 pm » I know a lot of pubs are now doing food to supplement their income. During the day do you have a favourite Kingston cafe? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:37 pm » a favourite Kingston PUB? hehe well I must confess I do not frequent Kingston Pubs to any great degree at all, the list we have on Kingston PUBS the third one on that List, THE BEAR, ESHER I was in last week for a fair few pints, full marks to them |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:36 pm » A lot of people who are likely to post on here are probably down the pub, have you got a favourite Kingston pub? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:35 pm » there is more than 1 group, here are a couple FACEBOOK GROUP and ANOTHER FACEBOOK GROUP I would like to ask you Highway, is it actually WORTH joining these groups? |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:35 pm » The area is quiet big, is there a Facebook group for Kingston? that should drum up some custom |
|
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:33 pm » August it started but not a lot since then |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:33 pm » PM for you waits opening |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:32 pm » It's farly quiet on here Falk, has it been running long? |
| falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:32 pm » yeah it's a lonely place at night but evening can be good times |
|
The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:31 pm » fancy seeing you here. |
|
falkor « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:31 pm » lo |
| The Highway Man « Mon Nov 01, 2010 7:30 pm » Ah, found you at last!! |
